Immortal – All Shall Fall

1.    All Shall Fall
2.    The Rise of Darkness
3.    Hordes to War
4.    Norden on Fire
5.    Arctic Swarm
6.    Mount North
7.    Unearthly Kingdom
Bergen’s cold black metallers return here with their first album in five years, with Aura Noir bassist Apollyon  and drummer Horgh giving them a stable rhythm section and a strong foundation on which to create their grim frostbitten noise.

The modern production values on the album allow every instrument to stand out on its own, but musically this is classic Immortal with evil tremolo picking guitars and lightning fast drums, only slowing down occasionally on a crushing bridge riff.

While it is easy to criticise the band for being resistant to change and sticking to a well worn sonic template, one could say the same of Slayer, Motörhead or many greats of rock and metal. While many of their contemporaries are trying to add elements of progressive rock and additional instrumentation to their amour, Immortal have resisted this trend in favour of ploughing a more familiar trail which clings to their classic sound and should please any existing fan of the band.

The blizzard of harmonics that forms the solo to ‘Arctic Swarm’ is one of many impressive displays of musicianship that permeates this recording, and topped with vocalist Abbath’s razor sharp snarl, it’s hard to resist. Who needs new tricks?
