If you know anything about The Dillinger Escape Plan, you’ll know that whatever they do, they’ll have the capacity to wrong foot any listener, and ‘Option Paralysis’ continues in that mould. Any fears that the three year hiatus since ‘Ire Works’ might have taken the wind out of their sails is completely unfounded. In fact, ‘Option Paralysis’ might just be their most complete work yet.
It’s the opener which perfectly encapsulates what DEP 2010 is all about: with a cheeky nod to ‘Abe The Cop’ from breakthrough EP ‘Under The Running Board’ and a continuation of the forays into clean vocals peppered through ‘Miss Machine’ and ‘Ire Works’, but still with the ferocious intensity and willingness to experiment that has always been the centre point of these math-core pioneers: ‘Widower’ has a gradual metamorphosis from hauntingly fractured Scott Walker-esque piano to a passage that wouldn’t be out of place on ‘Calculating Infinity’. ‘Endless Endings’ is a wholesale return to the Dimitri Minakakis-era, with the stop-start-stop-go-go-go guitar runs and those throat-ripping screams we all fell in love with in the first place.
Even in a genre where standing out is a staple, Dillinger have once again proved themselves; when the riffs of ‘Chinese Whispers’ or ‘Crystal Morning’ start piling out of your speakers mob-handed, you know you’re listening to something special. Like on Mastodon’s masterpiece ‘Crack The Skye’, the Dillinger Escape Plan have sought to simultaneously consolidate all their strengths into a record that is nothing but pure distilled Dillinger.
