Be Persecuted - End Leaving

3.    All End Soon
4.    End Leaving
5.    Swirl
6.    Curtain Call

China isn’t a country synonymous with black metal but it is home to Be Persecuted, a suicidal black metal band signed to heavyweight black metal label No Colours Records. ‘End Leaving’ is the trio’s second full-length and pitches itself as a worthy rival for suicidal black metal bands in the Western world.

Perhaps Be Persecuted are not so different; post-rock/shoegaze influences have been fused successfully into the music to contrast the distorted guitars but the melodies sound somehow more genuine and more melancholic than bands such as Shining or Make a Change...Kill Yourself. The vocals of Zhao are beautifully deranged, similar to Silencer’s. ‘All End Soon’ showcases catchy drumming pinned against a lonely keyboard soundscape with melodic and distorted guitars, culminating in a draconian atmosphere that encapsulates what depressive black metal should represent. ‘Curtain Call’ is a thoughtful instrumental embellished with weather samples devoid of any black metal, the guitars fixating purely on slowly unravelling a melody.

‘End Leaving’ is noticeably more accessible than the rawer debut ‘I.I’, with the band modernising themselves. Although some purists may consider accessibility a reduction in integrity, the songs are more memorable and prove they have progressed sufficiently. This release may be nothing ground-breaking but this trio are significantly more interesting than most bands that fashionably cram black metal with post-rock.
