‘The Angel and the Dark River’ is the third full-length album by British doom metal band, My Dying Bride. The record was originally released way back in 1995. It was then re-released a year later with an extra track and a bonus live disc. The band have since released another seven studio albums.

My Dying Bride are still well-known, after twenty years in the business, for their melancholy, doom-and-gloom sound. They manage to pull this sound off very well indeed. Many bands have tried and failed to replicate this unique style of music but MDB have got the mixture of baritone vocals and dark riffs spot on – something that I think only they will ever be able to do so perfectly. The most memorable track on the album is ‘Your Shameful Heaven’.   It is so well constructed and is, in every aspect, amazing. The singer mentioned in an interview that is was a tricky track to work on, but the work has certainly paid off and is likely to please their dedicated fans and non-fans alike. Every track on the album is fantastic but particular highlights are also ‘From Darkest Skies and Sea To Suffer In’.
My Dying Bride are not a band that you immediately take a shine to after the first listen. But if you appreciate death/doom metal then they will grow on you and there’s nothing you can do about it- definitely one to buy.
