Arabrot’s third full-length will be their first to receive a formal release in the UK. Luckily for us, 'The Brother Seed' is an absolute stormer, maybe even a classic. When Noise or Sludge is done well, certain emergent sounds and feelings come through, and the music seems to take on an existence of its own. This effect is subtle. It requires excellent technical ability, a delicate balance between creativity and discipline (qualities that are clearly evident in all of Arabrot’s output), and a deft hand in the production process (provided here by none other than Steve Albini). In this way, a seemingly chaotic song like 'Holes/Fake Dmitri', becomes an exquisite embroidery; ‘Pest/Misery’ is like a three act, emotion tearing stage tragedy. Self proclaimed influences include The Melvins, The Swans and Throbbing Gristle. However, it is possible to hear any number of vaunted echoes reverberating through these tracks, including those of a young Nick Cave (The Birthday Party), Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, Babes in Toyland, The Jesus Lizard and even Captain Beefheart. No doubt, much of this is unintentional, but that is even more to Arabrot’s credit, and regardless of high comparisons they maintain a recognisable and unique style of their own. 'The Brother Seed' is a very fine achievement.
