With a brief reformation in 2007, grotesque melodic death metal pioneers At The Gates, show the world they are still with us in spirit; as they release a second reissue of their (now) highly regarded 1993 album, ‘With Fear I Kiss The Burning Darkness’. Still featuring the bonus tracks of the 2003 reissue and liner notes written by frontman, Tomas Lindberg, the 2010 collector’s edition also includes a DVD of their show in Groningen, Holland, recorded during the band's tour with My Dying Bride in 1992.
Heard by surprisingly few, but made before the worldwide success of the commercialised ‘Slaughter of the Soul’, lie two untouched gems. These are their debut, ‘The Red in the Sky is Ours’, and its follow-up, ‘With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness’. These are absolutely mind-blowing albums. The latter, showing the steady progression of the bands maturity, is by far the most versatile, explorative and most underrated At The Gates album recorded to date. Its rough edges and ever-so-slightly off-kilter rhythms, are what makes this album natural and true to life. With highlights such as ‘Non-Divine’ and ‘Raped by the Light of Christ’, it’s obvious why At The Gates were at the forefront of the, then new, Swedish craze.
This collector’s edition of ‘With Fear I Kiss the Burning Darkness’, is the perfect opportunity to see what At The Gates were truly about; visually, mentally, and through the music. A must have for any genuine metal freak.
