Eisbrecher have, on occasion, managed to evade the easy comparison to German Industrial Kings Rammstein; particularly with their 2008 release ‘Sunde’, of which tracks such as ‘Kuss’ and ‘Herzdieb’ oozed character. However, ‘Eiszeit’ doesn’t quite progress from, or even amount to previous material. There is an ostensible sense of this being done to death as it struggles to reach anything vastly memorable.
There’s still an edge to their sound; ‘Amok’ proffers menacing industrial clunks and churns, amidst solid vocals; whilst ‘Bombe’ with its cheeky, grinding riff’s, sheds a glimmer of hope on an album of otherwise dull mediocrity. ‘Gothkiller’, which features Lacrimas Profundere’s latest vocalist, Rob Vitacca is also another strong track – reaching choral haunts reminiscent of Sisters of Mercy.
It’s a peculiar release, in that when things begin to pale and become ignorable, they pick up the pace; however taken as a whole there’s not enough consistency to warrant too much credit and it cowers in the shadow of stark comparisons.
