Although it is not overly rare for bands in the metal scene to stick around for a long time, it is best to keep in mind that Unleashed have been going got twenty one years previous to latest album, ‘As Yggdrasil Trembles’. But quite frankly after this period of time, don’t expect Unleashed to change their death metal ways, as if this release shows anything, it is pure consistency. Their tenth album is still as speedy and sharp as ever, with the Viking death metal chanted throughout with mythical lyrics.

However when I say chants, do not expect Amon Amarth-esque battle cries, for these are chants of death metal – whether this is embarrassing or not that a band must inform you of how metal they are completely depends on your taste. Not that it’s fair to call Unleashed cringe worthy, as after all, there are plenty who have copied this idea and made it ten times worse, cough Turisas cough.

There are solos worthy of being classic by the pioneers of Viking death with a thrashy attack and although not overly brutal, Unleashed are still as dark and evil to keep up with all the annihilating newbies on the scene.

Unleashed are a band you can rely on to not change their ways, so if you were expecting a change of direction, you’ll be disappointed. However, if you’re happy with some honest and traditional Swedish death metal, ‘As Yggdrasil Trembles’ will keep you satisfied.
