If you’re in a band, and find yourself regularly mutter to yourself “humph, I bet that pie-scoffing keyboard warrior couldn’t do a better job”, well then humph no longer. Dom Lawson has found time between cups of coffee and stacks of promos to record an album all of his very own. And ‘Botheration’ is the shining result.
Oaf are a drum and bass duo, and take the elastic nerviness of Mclusky and the bass-led rumble of the legendary NoMeansNo and a Russ Russell production job into a massive catchy-as-syphilis-fish hooks package. The likes of ‘Tiny When Erect’ and ‘A Euphemism For Tits’ are shot through with punk rock energy, and deliciously puerile lyrics, which might either be a deep form of social satire, or else an excuse for a great deal of shouting. Either way, it’s an exhilarating ride, especially on ‘Ride The Black Whale’, which is probably what would happen if Jello Biafra started writing music under the influence of tequila, sherbert and a copy of Viz stashed alongside his copy of ‘No Logo’.
