It comes as no surprise that the opener of Blind Guardian’s new offering is the theme for an RPG game (‘Sacred 2 - Fallen Angel’). In fact, that’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear these German power-nerds pelting at top speed through a verse and rushing to crest the wave of the next overblown chorus. But like World of Warcraft is to thousands of pale, bleary eyed hermits, Blind Guardian’s brand of over-dramatic power metal is addictive!
Despite each chorus sounding like an army and all the layers of heavy and symphonic sound, the music is very distinct with a pristine production and classy mix which serves to highlight the stirring and majestic voice of Hansi Kürsch. It really speaks for the composition that the core - the relentless speed of the drums and solid base of the guitar melodies - fades into the song writing so seamlessly. Many additional instruments are at play throughout this opus and the world and folk music references suit the direction entirely. ‘At The Edge Of Time’ may be unimaginatively titled, but the fantasy/folk inspired themes lose their stigma when you get stuck into the roof-raising chorus of ‘Tanelorn (Into The Void)‘. The high score here reflects the diverse musical accomplishment and masterful execution, but as always the lactose-intolerant should avoid - cheese is one of the main ingredients here.
