For the better part of two decades now Limbonic Art have been a step apart from the norm when it comes to black metal and this latest album is no exception. For starters the overall sound the band has developed is vastly different to any of its counterparts in both structure and sound and is something that has been further developed for ‘Phantasmagoria’.
The ‘prologue’ is a song in itself but acts as more of a taster for what is to come, which is a combination of swirling riffs and out of this world keyboard accompaniments. An organ effect is scarcely ever as effective as this, with the exception of Finnish doomsters Skepticism, and creates that slightly unsettling overtone. In fact through much of the album there are some doomier moments, especially during ‘Dark Winds’, which has more of a dismal edge to it.
It isn’t all slow by any means, the fast parts are full of furious, chaotic melodies that have just a touch of the surreal about them, but what else would be expected from this act? Another point to mention is how audible the vocals are, still very harsh but nearly every syllable is crystal clear.
Another triumph from Limbonic Art, proving that music can be fantastical, strange and completely brilliant all at the same time.
