Dogs For Breakfast – Rose Lane Was Tucker’s Girlfriend
Your God Is Gone
The Beginning
Three Steps To Salvation
I’ll Guide Your Soul
Blood River
Now then, this is the sort of thing we’ve been missing. Short sharp bursts of intelligent hardcore, and the splendidly surreal named Dogs For Breakfast are here to provide it with their first EP. After slaving away for 10 years in another band, you expect this Italian trio to be tight as tight, and opener ‘Your God Is Gone’ doesn’t disappoint, coming on like a hyper-kinetic Dillinger Escape Plan covering Shai Hulud, i.e. it springs from loins of hardcore, without being hamstrung by being tied at the umbilical chord by breakdowns and gang vocals.
At times, this has far more in common with the likes of Yakuza: ‘The Beginning’ has the kind of lithe guitar work that is indisputably heavy and involving at the same time. ‘Three Steps To Salvation’ is Black Flag’s ‘My War’ side two pleasingly updated for the modern generation, complete with Greg Ginn-style atonal guitar soloing: a vicious sludgy grind that’s carried over into ‘I’ll Guide Your Soul’. A stirring first release.
