CYNIC – CARBON-BASED ANATOMY (8)
So, Cynic have left the distorted realms of metal to venture into the cosmic universe of progressive rock. Inevitable yes; Cynic have always carried with them a distinctly progressive edge which has made them rise above their peers. ‘Carbon-Based Anatomy’ is a purely progressive record, and contains within in a sound that the band have obviously been working towards since their inception. The metallic guitars are all but gone, and what replaces them is a stunning mixture of ambient, atmospheric and striking songs which, together, produce the band’s most impressive release to date.
The musical journey begins with ‘Amidst The Coals’ which contains a haunting shamanic chant (beautifully sung by Amy Correia) and ends with the majestic opulence of ‘Hieroglyph’ which takes us into outer space. The title track is a rare splendour, with more clout than their metal records. Some fans who liked their metallic elements will be put off by the twee exuberance of ‘Bija!’ and ‘Box Up My Bones’, but it is this uplifting and joyful facet that gives ‘Carbon-Based Anatomy’ its edge. Those more metal inclined amongst you might be put off by this transcendence into progressive rock, but give it a listen and you will realise it’s just as memorable, if not more so, as their previous albums.
