ESOTERIC – PARAGON OF DISSONANCE (8)

Birmingham based band, Esoteric, have done it once again – combining funeral doom with death metal to create total immersion in the depths of sorrow.  As usual with an Esoteric album, the tracks are epically long.  It’s split across two discs and racks up a whopping hour and thirty seven minutes of play time.

The first track on the album, ‘Abandonment’ is slow to build up, but once it gets going you’ll find yourself enveloped in something so atmospheric and dark that it’s impossible to escape. ‘Loss of Will’ features a chilling piano introduction that fits well with the dark and moody overtones of the album. ‘Disconsolate’ is simply heart wrenching.  However, the whole album has a rather harrowing feel to it.  There is just something mighty about this album, which is difficult to put into words; it’s like having a vast, dark shadow watching over you as you listen.

The hollow, almost echoing quality that has been used to record this album gives the impression of being pulled towards something; like you are experiencing the music, rather than just witnessing it.
