MITHRAS – TIME NEVER LASTS (8)
English death metal titans Mithras have always been somewhat unfairly disregarded when talk about UK death metal surfaces. Undeterred by this, the band has nevertheless successfully delivered relentless, rhythmic death metal with serene intergalactic atmospheres interwoven to their voracious brutality. ‘Time Never Lasts’ is composed of new anthems and three live renditions of older tracks.
The title track opener is instantly identifiable as Mithras, with heavy and irregular guitar riffs paired with furious breakneck drumming. The beautiful soaring melodies soon make their appearance, Mithras’ ultimate trademark. ‘Inside the Godmind’ opens a sinister, high-pitched melody that submits to blastbeats couple with Morbid Angel-esque riffage. It has more intricacies and mood changes than the opener and proves itself as a satisfying follow up.
The first two live tracks are from the debut release ‘Forever Advancing…Legions’ while the final is from their sophomore album ‘Worlds Beyond the Veil’, evidence that the band can execute these challenging tracks live. Although this EP contains no great surprises, it certainly is excellent to hear new Mithras songs for four years and enough to satisfy appetites until the duo get round to releasing a full-length.
