NAILED COIL – THE OUTCOME OF ANXIETY (5)

Despite reaching its peak not long ago, metalcore already seems to be losing momentum, with even gentle giant Howard Jones of Killswitch Engage abandoning the cause. So is it really worth bands trying to break into the mainstream through this sound, seeing as the title has already been won by bands such as As I Lay Dying, Killswitch Engage and Devildriver? If Nailed Coil are anything to go by, then the answer is no, give up now.

Despite ‘The Outcome of Anxiety’ being their second album, it would appear that the Finns never broke into the UK metal scene, while the rest of Europe seem to have lapped them up enough for a DVD to be made straight after their debut was released. Nailed Coil deal in all the classic ingredients you would expect from a metalcore album, but that is precisely the problem. It is too predictable.

Opener ‘Bloodstains’ starts off promisingly with an anger and acceleration akin to Devildriver's latest full-length. But before you know it, whiny vocals overwhelm mediocre growls amid a slew of unoriginal beatdowns, producing a ham-fisted end result reminiscent of a gang of burly men sloshing pints at each other in half-conscious daze.

Alas, the production is clean and the musicianship is apparent but the whole album is just plain ordinary in a genre that's already drastically lacking in original material.
