Early opening doors means Gates of Slumber’s set is over by the time Soundshock arrives, but we’re just in time for Church of Misery’s set. This serial killer-fixated Japanese foursome are about as well-hinged as a runaway revolving door, but they make an absolutely delightful racket, which sounds like the bastard sons of Led Zeppelin covering Black Sabbath after being locked in a cellar with nothing but strong weed and cheap whiskey for company. They were well paired with Iron Monkey on a split CD, and their thunderous steamrolling racket obviously delights the crowd, as t-shirts sell like crack-laced hot cakes.
Which brings us on to the delightfully English Cathedral. Not content with being at the forefront of grindcore with Napalm Death, Lee Dorrian has also fronted one of the most consistently good doom bands of the last twenty years – a history that is well mined tonight. In an all too short set, the classics old and new come thick and fast; ‘Funeral Of Dreams’ and ‘Painting In The Dark’ from this year’s ‘The Guessing Game’ and ‘Ride’ and ‘Carnival Bizarre’ sounding as fresh and vital as they did all those years ago. They finish, as they must, with ‘Hopkins (Witchfinder General)’ and some absolutely ludicrous dancing from the delirious audience.
Here’s to another twenty years! |
