It looks like there were two treats in the last week of September; a second summer, and an acoustic set in beautiful chapel surroundings by none other than Anathema.

Although they’re stripped to the bare bones tonight (and have chosen to do so with only two Cavanagh brothers and Lee Douglas) they look confident, humbled as always at the sight of the crowd, and ready to give the short set their all. And it’s no wonder they look cosy, as each one of the trio show how hard-work has paid-off, stealing the breath of everyone present as they swath between swoons like ‘Thin Air’ and anthemic ‘Deep’. It’s as though they’ve deliberately plucked songs for tonight’s set that prove how enhanced and refined they’ve grown. Danny shows his versatile talent, pounding his knuckles on his guitar to loop tracks before scurrying off to tinkle on his piano keys or take to the mic, and Vincent and Lee’s vocals are stronger and more emotive than ever. It’s as if they’re not happy until the faces watching them stare back with wobbly chins and wet eyes.

As the hushed crowd fight back the tears, they’re finally led into a sing-a-long to ‘Fragile Dreams’ and pews are align with open mouths and clapping hands as the night draws to a close. A truly beautiful set in an absolutely stunning setting.
